'The Presena glacier at Passo Tonale in Italy has now opened for the winter. Their massive base depth last season meant it didn’t all melt over the summer so they have nearly a metre and a half of snow on the glacier ski area already.' That's the second story of that kind in two years, after the glacier in Alaska near Juneau in 2008. Once again, all the snow in Switzerland DID melt over the summer, despite the big depths in the winter, so it's not everywhere. But the chance is that Presena will not have lost mass over the previous 12 months... Regards Rhys Jaggar
