Wind turbines frozen in Minnesota

Stopped cold by the cold

page delimiter

4 Feb 10 - Eleven wind turbines erected last fall in Minnesota were expected to be spinning before Christmas, "but so far their blades have been largely motionless, apparently paralyzed by frigid weather," says this article in the Star Tribune.

The refurbished 115-foot turbines sit idly in Anoka, North St. Paul, Chaska, Shakopee, Buffalo and six other cities, apparently stopped cold by hydraulic fluid turning to gel and oil lubricants getting too sluggish.

Operators say they will get the windmills running within two months.

I hope they weren't depending on the turbines for heat.
