Volcanic activity in southern California?

4 Sep 05 - The dormant Obsidian Butte volcano in the Salton
Sea region of southern California recently recorded a significant
swarm of earthquakes. The quake map for the region showed 192
quakes for the week of May 1st. Four days later it showed 650
quakes - most ofthem clustered at the volcano.

When you look at it on a map, the lake - which is the lowest
point in the United States - looks like it could have formed in an
oldcaldera.

Photos of the area, with mud pots and what not, look like they
could have beentaken at Yellowstone. The Obsidian Butte volcano
last erupted some 16,000 yearsago in a four-vent eruption.
