Underwater volcanic eruption
building new island

23 Apr 07 - An underwater volcano has apparently erupted around Minami Iwojima Island in the Pacific, Japan Coast Guard officials said Monday, issuing a warning for vessels sailing nearby.

The coast guard confirmed a change in the color of the sea water and volcanic smoke in waters 60 kilometers south of Iwojima Island. The Japanese Meteorological Agency believes it is likely that the volcano called Fukutoku Okanoba has erupted, agency officials said.

A fishing boat spotted the unusual sea color and smoke, and informed the coast guard.

According to the agency, similar changes in sea water color believed to be caused by an underwater volcanic eruption have often been spotted in the waters. Following an eruption in 1986, an island about 600 meters in diameter and 15 meters in height emerged but shortly disappeared due to sea water erosion.
