29 Mar 09 - The volcano had a significant eruption at 1:20 a.m. sending
an ash plume 50,000 feet into the air, then a less powerful eruption
about 12 hours later.
After the first eruption, the Alaska Volcano Oobservatory detected
strong seismic activity lasting 20 minutes or more followed by an
hours-long low-level tremor.
Alaska Airlines has canceled more than 185 flights since the eruptions
began on March 22,
The last time the volcano erupted was during a
four-month period in 1989-90.
