13 May 11 - Growers estimate the damage from last week's surprising frost in the Czech Republic at hundreds of millions of Czech Crowns, the highest losses in decades.

Latest estimates put the damage at 37 percent of all fertile orchards in the Czech Republic. "Harvest from the effected (sic) areas will be minimal or none at all," said the Fruit Union association's president Martin Ludvík.

The annual output of the Czech fruit industry is estimated at 1.5 billion CZK [88 million USD] per year.

Though a third of the apple crop has been heavily damaged, cherries were probably the worst hit when frost severely damaged about three quarters of growing locations.

Extensive losses are expected for plums, pears, currants and strawberries, even apricot trees.
