I'm including extreme rainfall here because that's
what causes ice ages ... excess precipitation. If
you want to know how much snow would fall
if a rainstorm should change to snow, just add a
zero. (One inch of rain - add a zero - will turn
to 10 inches of snow.) Rainfall has increased so
dramatically that I'm only including accumulations
 of 1 inches or more.

Ten times normal rainfall in Texas - “ Texas just experienced its wettest November on record, and the records go back to 1895. Major cities throughout the state accumulated November rainfall totals that ranged from three to nearly ten times normal amounts. Austin recorded 350mm rain, which is 526% of normal.”

”June 2004 was also the wettest June on record in Texas . Now it looks as though 2004 may turn out to be the state’s wettest year on record.

”These record rainfall totals have been achieved without the aid of tropical storms or hurricanes.”

More snow than normally falls in an entire year - The National Guard rescued stranded travelers in Indiana as record-breaking snows shut down I-64 from Evansville to the Illinois state line. Evansville received 19.3 inches of snow, well over the normal yearly total of 14.2 inches, and shattering the record for any single day.

In Kentucky : Paducah got 14 inches, again well over the normal snowfall of 10 inches for the entire year. Amarillo , Texas received 3.7 inches of snow, more than triple the previous record for the date, while up to 20 inches of snow fell in parts of Ohio , leaving more than 300,000 homes and businesses without power. Meanwhile, residents of Arkansas are looking forward to only the ninth white Christmas in 120 years.

Record early snowfall (6 inches) in Anchorage, Alaska. "This is the most snow we've had on the ground this early in the season," meteorologist Dan Keirns said late Saturday afternoon. The previous record for largest early snow was 2.6 inches on Sept. 29, 1965. On average, the city gets its first snow by mid-October, according to Weather Service statistics. Unseasonable cold in Kansas City.  “Kansas City International Airport has recorded only seven 90-degree-plus days so far this summer,” says Greg Koch, a forecaster at the National Weather Service. “If averages held, there should have been around 30 of those scorchers already.”

“Remarkably,” says Koch, “August has already seen a 13-day consecutive stretch of below-average-temperature days. That followed 10 such days in late July through Aug. 1.”

April Snow in Parts of the Deep South – “An incredible storm system moved across the Deep South today, producing April snow in parts of western Tennessee and Kentucky. About 3.5 inches accumulated in Jackson, Tennessee, obliterating the previous April snowfall record of only 0.3 of an inch set on April 5, 1971. It was also the latest snowfall ever recorded at Jackson, beating the record from 1971. Even parts of Alabama received some snow; Huntsville, Alabama, also set a record for latest snowfall. Widespread snowfall totals of 1-6 inches were reported across western Tennessee, western and northern Kentucky, southern Indiana and southwestern Ohio today.” From AccuWeather Extreme/Severe Weather Summary.

I received this e-mail from a reader yesterday. I think it’s worth printing just as it came.

Mr. Felix,
I live in Charlotte North Carolina and we sure could use some genuine global warming right about now. We just got pounded with 17 inches of heavy wet snow in what is the worst snowfall here in 102 years. Every winter for the last 4 (counting this one) has brought devastating snowfalls and/or massive ice storms. Last winter, according to Duke Power, a massive ice storm caused the most power outages ever - even worse than hurricane Hugo. It was estimated that 10% of all trees in the Charlotte area were taken down by the ice. About a month ago another big ice storm pounded South Carolina and took down trees through half of the state while North Carolina was buried under snow. Most non- mountainous cities and towns in the Carolinas don't buy a lot of snow removal gear because they're not supposed to need it very often but we've definitely needed it for the last 4 years. I know that short-term weather variations mean nothing but I certainly wouldn't say that we're suffering from global warming around here. Winters here are starting to remind me of the Midwest. Every year now, it seems, we can expect a crippling ice storm or snowfall. Hello global cooling? Tim Rian
