I'm including extreme rainfall here because that's
what causes ice ages ... too much precipitation.
If you want to know how much snow would fall
if a rainstorm should change to snow, just add a
zero. (One inch of rain - add a zero - will turn
to 10 inches of snow.) Rainfall has increased so
dramatically that I'm only including accumulations
 of 1 inches or more.

Weather This Winter A Wild Ride  “This winter's weather will feature dramatic shifts between hot and cold from month to month, and even week to week,” say forecasters, who expect that the weather will fluctuate wildly.

"We're going to see outstanding cold spells throughout the U.S., balanced by unseasonable warmth," said AccuWeather's Joe Bastardi. "Our forecast emphasizes volatility, including cold snaps in the Northeast, and colder- than-normal weather in the Midwest and Plains," says Matt Rogers of EarthSat.”

Aug 2 Another long, cold winter, says Farmers Almanac. Beginning in February,  storms will hammer much of the eastern half of the country with no letup until early spring. Parts of New England will get snow into late April.

It looks like it will be reminiscent of last year, with a never-ending series of storms, said Sandi Duncan, the almanac's managing editor. The West also faces a cold, snowy winter, while mild weather is predicted in the Southeast.

The almanac, which claims an 80 percent success rate, has been predicting the weather for 187 years. It uses a secret method for its forecasts linked to sunspots, the position of the planets, and tidal action of the moon. Last year, the almanac predicted colder-than-normal temperatures and snow from Maine to Colorado.

Jul 18 Record-breaking July snow hits interior of Alaska. It was the first measurable snowfall to ever hit the Denali National Park and Preserve entrance in July, breaking records all over the heart of Alaska. Two inches of snow fell at Denali, one inch at Savage River, and 1 to 4 inches on Eagle Summit, forcing closure of the Denali Highway. Meanwhile, a record low temperature of 48F was reported in Fairbanks. It was only the third July day in 99 years in which temperatures in Fairbanks failed to reach 50 degrees.

Record hailstones in Nebraska. Measuring 6 inches wide (two inches wider than a softball) and 17 inches in circumference, one of the hailstones that fell in Aurora, Neb. last night was the largest hailstone ever recorded in Nebraska, and the second largest ever recorded in the United States.

The hailstones, some reportedly as big as volleyballs, punched all the way through some area roofs, leaving holes large enough to crawl through.

On Jun 28, searchers found an even bigger hailstone measuring 18 inches around, making it the nation's largest hailstone on record.

Jun 1 June 1st Storm Looked More Like a Winter Storm, says Joe D'Aleo, Chief Meteorologist at Intellicast. The lowest pressure in the storm reached at least 981 mb, very respectable for even a winter storm. Winds in Nantucket, MA gusted to 60mph.
It's interesting to note that Indianapolis had only one 80-degree day in the month of May. The last time that happened was in the 1920s.

Record number of tornadoes hammer mid-America. May 11, 2003. More than 300 tornadoes blasted through mid-America during the past 10 days, by far the most ever recorded in that span. The number of people killed (44) is almost as high as the number of people killed by tornadoes during an average year.

I've been asked if these tornadoes could have anything to do with an ice age. My answer is, yes, I think they're part of the ice-age cycle.  I liken it to a period of benign climate known as the Eemian Period. The Eemian Period, which was even warmer than today, lasted from about 126,000 years ago to 115,000 years ago. When it ended, it ended with a bang. Our climate descended into a full-blown ice age in less than 20 years. I think we're at a similar climate threshold right now.

Why the snow? Because it's 7 to 10 degrees colder in Colorado than normal. Right now, the Rockies have ten times the snow pack as they did at the same time last year.

Cold wet weather impacting crops. May 7, 2003. A spurt of rainy, cold weather has delayed rice planting in California, the nation's leading producer of short- and medium-grain rice. Only 30 percent of the 500,000-acre crop has been planted because of rain. And what has been planted isn't growing because of the cold weather.

Twice the normal amount of rain fell last month in the normally arid Sacramento Valley, where most of the state's rice is grown. Though rice is grown in water, farmers need dry weather to till and fertilize the soil. Then they flood the fields and release seeds from airplanes.

About 60 percent of the cotton crop in the San Joaquin Valley has also not been planted. Cherry and tomato growers have also reported losses.

Mar 12 Great Lakes freeze. Mar 12, 2003. Three of North America's Great Lakes - Lake Huron, Lake Superior and Lake Erie - have frozen over. More than a month of temperatures below minus four Fahrenheit - the coldest for March in more than a century -  has caused an ice blanket averaging as much as 24 inches deep on the lakes. Much of Lake Erie is buried under 28 or more inches of ice, while more than 90 percent of Lake Superior is covered with ice. At 32,000 square miles (82,000 sq. kilometers), Lake Superior is almost the size of Austria. The Duluth Seaway Port Authority is hoping that icebreaking ships will enable the shipping season to begin on time.

Jan 26 Tugboats were called into service to clear ice-clogged harbors and rivers in the Northeast, including New York's Hudson River. Some harbors ,had become impassable.

"Ninety percent of home heating oil and other energy fuels in the Northeast are delivered by water," said Coast Guard Petty Officer Megan Case. "We'll continue breaking ice to keep those waterways open."

Jan 23 The eastern two thirds of the nation shivered beneath a bitterly cold air mass that has threatened Florida's 9.1 billion dollar citrus crop, choked northern harbors with ice and left residents of North Carolina's Outer Banks digging out from a foot of snow.

Temperature records were broken for today's date across North Carolina. Record lows included 6 degrees in Asheville, 9 in Charlotte and 17 in Wilmington.

In New England several days of subzero weather have resulted in icy harbors, bays and inlets, some of which have become impassable. One ferryboat headed to Massachusetts' Cape Cod had to be turned back because the inner harbor in Hyannis was frozen.

Jan 22 Jay, Vermont. Temperatures dropped to minus 35 degrees today, as a cold wave extended from the northern Plains into New England. Arctic air has been blowing south for more than a week. "It's remarkable, the longevity of it," said Tim Morrin, a National Weather Service meteorologist at Upton, New York.

Thermometers registered 35 below at Embarrass, Minnesota, and nearby tower hit minus 31. The cold air extended as far south at North, Texas, where Borger registered 20 degrees and Kansas City, MO fell to just 16.
