Power Plant Saves Hundreds of Manatees

Saved by the warm-water discharge

22 Feb 10 - (Link includes a video) - When water temperatures dip below 68 degrees Fahrenheit, manatees can't cope with the cold, says marine biologist Andy Garrett with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Last month, Florida's water temperatures dropped as low as the 40s.

However, manatees have found a practical solution, says this article on CNN. "Hundreds gather in a canal warmed by water discharged from a Tampa Electric Co. power plant. There, they are able to escape the cold, floating in waters that stay around 78 degrees."

Perhaps humans aren't quite as bad as some would have us believe.
