Pacific Ocean gives birth to new volcanic island
9 Nov 06 - Crew aboard the yacht "Maiken" witnessed a volcanic
island forming a day out from Neiafu, Tonga, while sailing towards Fiji
the Matangi Tonga news website reported Wednesday.

The island is "one mile in diameter and with four peaks and a central
crater smoking with steam and once in a while an outburst high in the sky
with lava and ashes."

One mile in diameter! Do you suppose all of that hot basalt -
2,150F degrees hot - could be heating the seas?

The crew had earlier glimpsed "pumice rafts" floating on the water before
they "sailed into a vast, many-miles-wide belt of densely packed pumice".

Separately, a fishing boat captain reported seeing the volcanic island.
