18 Sep 10 - Heavy snow collapsed the roof on the main netball court to at the world-class Stadium Southland in Invercargill, New Zealand's southernmost and westernmost city.

Stadium Southland General Manager Nigel Skelt said it was lucky it did not happen during a busy time of week. "The result could've been far more catastrophic."

"We've never had a snow fall this big before, in our history," said Skelt.

"Farmers have been particularly badly hit.  Many sheep farmers have lost livestock with snow 20cm in places and more where it has drifted."

"The heavy snow also caused damage to a supermarket roof,"

"A netball team from Bisbane was diverted to Invercargill
after the 7.1 earthquake only to then find the sports stadium
roof had collapsed where they were going to play.

"More snow is forecast for tomorrow and the same weather
pattern looks to be repeating itself over the next week
bringing more cold temperatures and high winds over
both Islands.

The South Island is being battered by a storm the size of Australia,  says Glen.
