Mount St. Helens from Johnston Ridge 24 Sep 84

14 Feb 11 - Reports poured in this morning from southwest Washington and the Portland, Oregon area of an earthquake at Mount St. Helens.

Actually, several earthquakes – one 4.3 magnitude – shook an area north of Mount St. Helens, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

According to Bill Steele, Director of Information Services with the University of Washington seismology lab, there are no signs of volcanic activity, but the quakes could represent changes in the stress field at the volcano.

The larger earthquake "was pretty shallow," said Steele, "a depth of about five kilometers."

The aftershocks have been relatively large, said Steele. "At least two greater than magnitude 2.0, perhaps more, and then a lot of little ones."

So far, there are no reports of damage.
