Little Ice Age Cometh

Sunspots could disappear for decades

15 Sep10 - Matthew Penn and William Livingston, solar astronomers with the National Solar Observatory (NSO) in Tucson, Arizona, predict that by 2016 there may be no remaining sunspots, and that the sun may remain spotless for several decades, says this article on PhysOrg.com

The two astronomers examined 1500 sunspots and found that the average strength of the magnetic field of the sunspots has dropped from around 2700 gauss to 2000 gauss. (The Earth’s magnetic field strength is less than one gauss.)

If the strength continues to decrease at the same rate it will drop to 1500 gauss by 2016, and below this strength the formation of sunspots appears to be impossible, says Livingston. Sunspot formation is triggered by the magnetic field.

The last time sunspots disappeared altogether, during the Maunder Minimum (about 1645 to 1715), our planet descended into a lengthy period of cooling known as the Little Ice Age.
