24 May 11 - Specialists assume that the eruption in the Grimsvötn volcano on Vatnajökull glacier will continue to be forceful in the coming days, accompanied by significant ash fall.

Although the Grímsvötn eruption is larger than the one in Eyjafjallajökull, it is unlikely to cause the same degree of disruption because the ash plume is being injected much higher into the atmosphere.

With an ash storm raging, at 2 pm, it was dark as night in Kirkjubaejarklaustur. A local farmer said it was as if someone had glued black plastic bags on the windows.

According to the Iceland Review Online, the eruption is the largest Grimsvotn eruption in a century. It is similar to the eruption of 1873, according to geophysicist Magnús Tumi Gudmundsson.
