Japan on Alert After Biggest Eruption in 50 Years

Lightning coming FROM the volcano

27 Jan 11 - A one-mile cordon has been established around Shinmoedake volcano on Mount Kirishima after it scattered rocks and ash across southern Japan and sent smoke billowing 5,000ft into the air, its worst eruption in 50 years.

Take a look at the photos. The caption beneath the first one says “Lightning strikes.”

However, reader Stephanie Relfe points out that "The lightning is UPSIDE DOWN.  Just like in your books! It looks as though the lightning is coming FROM the volcano."

Meteorological Agency volcanologist Sei Iijima said the eruption did not pose a threat to nearby cities, and a major eruption was not imminent. But he added: 'You can never say never with a volcano, although the lack of magma movement beneath the surface leads us to believe that this activity won't lead to a large-scale eruption,' he told ABC News.

This is the largest eruption recorded at Kirishima since 1959.
