It's going to last all week! ... and more is on the way

3 Feb 09 - The heaviest snowfall in 18 years brought Britain to a standstill, crippling businesses, transport networks, hospitals and schools - and further hammering the recession-hit economy.

A fifth of the national workforce - 6.4 million - are estimated not to have turned up yesterday.

London's buses were halted for the first time in living memory - they even continued to run during the Blitz - and the rail network ground to a halt.

Airports were closed and Heathrow, the world's busiest terminal, closed both runways for several hours.

More snow is expected overnight, and temperatures are forecast to plummet to -6C.

Even though the snow is expected to subside week’s end, the cold snap will last for at least another fortnight.

Worst hit areas in the Pennines might have nearly two feet of snow by tonight. An FSB spokesman said the total bill could hit 3billion.

By last night more than a foot was expected to have fallen in some areas south of London, which has not seen such high snowfall since 1987.
