Idaho avalanches hit four houses

29 Jan 08 - The National Weather Service in Boise, Idaho, issued winter storm warnings for all the state's mountain areas on Tuesday, and predicted about 20 inches of snow would fall in Idaho's mountains and up to 4 inches in valleys in the southern part of the state through Tuesday and into Wednesday.

Still more snow is on the way.

"By Thursday, the next storm will be right on our doorstep," said Jay Breidenbach of the National Weather Service in Boise. "This is quite a storm system."

Avalanche centers across the Western U.S. issued warnings Tuesday in the wake of a freakish conversion of two storms Sunday that inundated many areas with snow - about 20 inches in parts of northern Idaho and 1-2 feet in central Idaho.

"It's very unusual," said Doug Abromeit, director of the U.S. Forest Service's National Avalanche Center. "Typically the storm is not this widespread."

In Ketchum, officials urged residents in some slide-prone areas about a mile west of the city not to stay in their homes. "We don't want any people sleeping in those zones," said city spokeswoman Kim Rogers. She said about 20 slides were reported Monday, hitting four houses.
