19 Nov 10 - The Icelandic volcano that grounded flights across Europe had been rumbling for months before it exploded in April, say a new study.

"One flank of Eyjafjallajokull had been swollen by more than 15 centimetres for 11 weeks before the volcano began erupting."

''Several months of unrest preceded the eruptions, with magma moving around downstairs in the plumbing and making noise in the form of earthquakes,'' said Kurt Feigl, a professor of geosciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and co-author of the study.

"The deformation of the Earth's crust around Eyjafjallajokull, and the resulting small earthquakes, began to increase in January. A few weeks later, sensors and GPS stations began detecting rapid expansion of the mountain."

From April 22 until May 22, the volcano pumped out an average of 30,000-60,000 litres of magma every second.

"This article suggests that 15cm is a significant deformation," says Richard. "What would the same scientist's think of Yellowstone?"
