5 Aug 08 – A two-acre patch of land near Fillmore in southern California's Ventura County shot up to 812 degrees on Friday. Geologists and firefighters don’t know why.

"It's a thermal anomaly," said Ron Oatman, spokesman for the Ventura County Fire Department.

Firefighters noticed the hot spot Friday after smoke rose through five cracks in the ground. From a distance, it looked like "a small, smoldering camp fire," Oatman said.

Several hundred feet below the hotspot lie pockets of gas, tar and oil.

This same rea has recorded high heat several times since 1987 and has always been dubbed a "natural phenomenon," Oatman said.

The fire department has established a control line around the area and is monitoring the area daily, he said.
