17 Dec 10 - With thousands of cars stuck on motorways near Utrecht and Rotterdam, the national meteorological institute (KNMI) on Friday asked people to avoid travelling.

Up to 10 cm of snow had fallen in the western half of the country making major traffic arteries unpassable.

Amsterdam cancelled all bus services, as did bus companies in some rural areas.

The snow is forecast to continue throughout the weekend, with temperatures remaining below freezing until Monday.

It's the second period of significant snowfall in Holland this season, despite the country's reputation for relatively mild and wet winters.

Thanks to Argiris Diamantis for this link

"Ten cm of snow may not seem much," says Argiris, "but our country is known for its mild and wet winters. The traffic was totally disrupted."
