7 Mar 09 – The potential exists for a large winter storm from the West Coast into the Deep South and even the Mid-Atlantic region with a variety of precipitation types, says meteorologist Larry Cosgrove. The wild-card is the presence of a vast motherlode of Arctic air forecast to settle over Ontario by March 15.

“Timing is of course as uncertain,” says Cosgrove, “but the three days including St. Patrick's Day (March 17) seem a good bet.” The presence of a persistent subtropical high over Cuba, Florida and the Bahamas would provide both moisture and an incentive for the disturbance to take a more northward track along the coast. The abundance of bitter cold air could to some extent replicate the recent March 1 - 2 storm.
