Ships Freed From Ice

5 Mar 10 - "Ice is common in the Baltic Sea during winter,"
says accuweather.com, "but ice of the thickness that has trapped
this many ships is unheard of."

4 Mar 10 - Dozens of ships, including
a passenger ferry with nearly 1,000
people on board, are stuck in the ice off Sweden's east coast, officials said.

The ferries are stranded between
Stockholm and the Aland Islands,
while cargo boats are stuck in the
Bay of Bothnia.

Ice breakers were trying to free the ferry Amorella, with rescue helicopters and military hovercraft standing by to evacuate passengers if needed

The ice rarely gets thick enough in the Stockholm archipelago to trap powerful passenger ferries like the Amorella.

It is reportedly the worst Baltic freeze in 15 years.
