Fifteen million houses collapse in China –
and we’re told that only 32,000 died?

_____________________________

20 May 08 - An article in yesterday’s Seattle Times said that 15 million houses collapsed during last week’s earthquake.

The “confirmed death toll rose to 34,073, according to the State Council, China's Cabinet. Another 5,260 remained buried in Sichuan, the provincial government said, according to Xinhua.”

“Officials have said they expect final deaths in the disaster to exceed 50,000, with more than 245,000 reported injured. Losses to businesses totaled $9.5 billion, Deputy Industry Minister Xi Guohua said Monday.”

I read an article last Friday where parents insist that 400 students
were killed in the collapse of a local school, but officials say that
               only 20 died.

If twenty times more students died than officials are willing to
admit, and if they’re willing to admit that more than 32,000 died,
and if they’re willing to admit that 15 million houses collapsed,
then I expect the number deaths caused by this earthquake to be
               closer to a million.

(The article was entitled “China stands still to remember quake
victims.” The 15-million figure was published in the paper version,
but does not appear in the online version.)
