Eruzione dell’Etna vista da Reggio Calabria

12 Jan 11 - Just received this message from Giovanni Villino in Italy.

The eruption is being described as one of the more "spectacular" eruptions in recent years, says Villino, a professional journalist in Palermo, Sicily.

I've used Google Translate to translate Villino's website ( www.giovannivillino.it/ ) but you may have a better translation.

Observations of the volcano in recent days had alerted engineers and scientists of the possible leakage of gas and lava.

This is being monitored by the Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) in Catania. You can see webcam images on the INGV website.

Images from Reggio Calabria show the magnitude of this eruption, which in some shots looks very close to the town.

According to INGV, on the evening of 12 January, Strombolian activity at the pit crater continues, with the amplitude of volcanic tremors increasing. Shortly after 21:00 an overflow started from the edge of the east pit crater moving in the direction of the western wall of Valle del Bove. It is also possible that the emission of volcanic ash may occur.

With an elevation of 3350 meters (10,990 ft), Mt. Etna  dominates the landscape of NE Sicily, Italy.

Mt Etna has the longest period of documented eruptions in the world, most recently in 2010.
