5 Jul 11 - Magnitude 6.5, 18 miles (30 km) west of Taupo, NZ.

Beautiful Lake Taupo, in the center of New Zealand's North Island, is the southern hemisphere’s largest lake and one of the largest lakes in the world.

Lake Taupo is actually a huge volcano with a fiery history. Its most recent eruption, in 181 AD, was large enough to change the sky as far away as Europe and China. The town of Taupo sits at the edge of the lake. Local attractions include trout fishing, skiing and geothermal parks.

According to John Search's website  - Volcano Live - Taupo's 186 AD eruption created the fifth largest caldera in history. Taupo also erupted 26,500 years ago (its largest eruption), 150,000 years ago and 330,000 years ago.

"The volcano makes up only the northern half of the lake and a small surrounding area," says Search.
