27 Jan 09 - Coast guard officials said the ice pack in the area was thicker than usual because of a combination of cold temperatures and a westerly wind.

The ice, which is 15 metres thick in some sections, at times trapped the icebreaker itself. (Fifteen meters is 49 feet! – almost 5 stories of ice!)http://www.cbc.ca/canada/montreal/story/2009/01/27/mtl-trappedships-0127.html?ref=rss

Four vessels trapped
27 Jan 09 - A spokesman for the cruise line said the passengers left Montreal on Sunday for a weeklong trip. But ice quickly closed in around the vessel Monday near Matane, Quebec.

In addition to the cruise ship, a passenger ferry, a cargo vessel, and a Canadian Coast Guard ice breaker were trapped in the ice for a time but all managed to either free themselves or with the aid of an ice breaker, officials said.
