Catastrophic Avalanche Danger in Switzerland
__________________

.
27 Mar 09 - “This map is from the weekly avalanche danger report of the Swiss National Research Centre in Davos,” says reader Rhys Jaggar.

"They compare current snow depths at 2000m with 'the last catastrophic year' (their quotation not mine), 1999. In that year there was a freak set of storms in mid to late February all across the Alps when 2 metres plus of snow was dropped to very low levels and avalanches were very frequent and damaging.

“The point is this: there is much, much more snow as winter ends this year than for many years. In the absence of a very hot summer this year, we may see something similar to what Alaska experienced last year in terms of how long the snow stays and whether glaciers retreat AT ALL this summer.”
