Weather officials predicted that Lake Erie will freeze over for the first time in five years within a week.

"It's very early to have this much ice," said Steve McLaughlin, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Buffalo.

It was cold enough to shut down Vermont's Bolton Valley ski resort and the Big Rock ski area in Mars Hill, Maine.

Cleveland, Ohio, where it was snowing and 10 degrees at noon Wednesday, has received nearly 17 inches of snow in the past week.

          - 32 below zero in Fort Kent, Maine
          - A record-setting 47 below zero in Pollock, S.D.
          - 38 below zero at Depot Mountain, Maine
          - 25 below in Pellston, Michigan
          - 25 below zero in Massena, N.Y.
          - 29 below zero in Glenwood, Minnesota
          - 20 below zero at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport
