Astronauts witness volcanic eruption from
International Space Station

 __________________

24 Jun 09 - Sarychev Peak, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, in the Kuril Island chain near Japan, suddenly sprang to life on June 12.

NASA scientists look down on the Sarychev Peak volcano as the dramatic eruption takes place. The force of the blast sends clouds scattering.

Astronauts on the International Space Station, which was flying overhead at the time, captured this image of the ash-cloud blasting upward, scattering clouds in an almost perfect circle.
