Army rescues 70 stranded motorists after blizzard blankets parts of UK

______________________________

5 Dec 08 - Yesterday, the Army was mobilised to help drivers caught up in blizzards and snow drifts.

After several 999 calls two 4x4 vehicles from the B Company 4th Battalion The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment were dispatched, along with police, to one of east Lancashire's busiest roads.

The recent wave of Arctic weather caused traffic chaos, power cuts and the closure of hundreds of schools.

As much as 20cm fell in the Durham Dales, and 17cm was recorded at Redesdale, Northumberland, with driving winds causing drifts on transpennine routes in what was the heaviest snowfall of the winter so far.

Several hundred across Yorkshire alone were shut, more than 100 in Greater Manchester, 70 in Lancashire, 34 in Cumbria, 70 in County Durham and 33 in Northumberland.

Dozens of country roads were blocked yesterday by minor accidents, motorways and dual carriageways had lane closures, and routes over the Pennines were shut entirely.

Passengers at Leeds Bradford Airport faced lengthy delays with heavy snow on the runway causing flight cancellations.

More snow is expected next week.
