12 Dec 08 – Bookies are receiving bets that the Thames will freeze over, while ministers meet in Brussels to set new global warming targets and the UN conducts a major “climate-change” conference in Poland.

The average temperature in Britain for the first third of December was a chilly 1.7C (35.1F)  -  compared with the long-term average of 5.2C (41.4F).

The last time Britain had such a cold start to December was in 1976, when the average temperature was 0.8C (33.4F).

Climate scientists say 2008 will be the coldest year globally this decade.
