3 Jun 11 - Popocatepetl volcano, which towers over Mexico City, blasted a spectacular plume of ash about 2 miles (3 km) into the sky early this morning. The 17,886-foot Popocatepetl, a tongue-twisting name often shortened to "Popo," shook and rumbled for several minutes before the eruption, one of five eruptions from early Thursday to early Friday. Ash was reported falling in several small communities as the plume moved toward the states of Puebla, Morelos and Mexico, which surround the capital, said the National Center for the Prevention of Disasters. Authorities said the ash was not dangerous for the population, although civil protection coordinator Laura Gurza did admit that the cloud out was the largest 'in several years.'
