31 May 10 - The National Weather Service on Guam today announced that an undersea volcano has erupted between the islands of Sarigan and Anatahan in the Northern Mariana Islands.

Fish and Wildlife Personnel on Sarigan reportedly heard a loud explosion from the south, and shortly thereafter noticed ash falling around them. They also reported the sound of a wave passing by.

The Weather Service reports that the volcano ejected hot water vapor and sent ash up to 40, 000 feet.

"USGS monitors don't have instruments on submarine volcanoes, and it took a while for scientists to pinpoint the exact location of the volcano," said this article on cnn.com.
          As I've said so many times: We know more about the moon than we do
          about underwater volcanoes.

30 May 10 - VOLCANIC ACTIVITY REPORTED ABOUT 90 MILES NORTH OF SAIPAN BETWEEN ANATAHAN AND SARIGAN... FROM AN UNDERSEA VOLCANO WHICH EJECTED HOT WATER VAPOR AND ASH TO 40000 FEET.

SATELLITE IMAGES SHOW... POSSIBLY SOME ASH DRIFTED SOUTHWARD ACROSS GUAM AND THE CNMI EARLY SUNDAY.

THERE IS NO IMMEDIATE DANGER FOR RESIDENTS OF GUAM... ROTA... TINIAN... SAIPAN...OR NORTHERN ISLANDS OF THE MARIANAS.
