| 14 Jun 10 - The Philippine Institute of
Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said Tuesday that the
situation at Taal Volcano is alarming, and that an Alert
Level 2 remains in effect. An Alert Level 2 means the
volcano is undergoing magmatic intrusion which could
eventually lead to an eruption.
Phivolcs said it has recorded seven volcanic
quakes Monday night until early morning Tuesday, with the
strongest recorded at 6 a.m.
Taal Volcano is located on
the island of Luzon in the Philippines about 31 miles (50
km) from Manila. It consists of an island in Lake Taal,
which is situated within a caldera formed by an earlier,
very powerful eruption.
Part of the Pacific ring of
fire, Taal Volcano has erupted violently many times, causing
major loss of life in areas surrounding the lake. Though
there
have been 33 recorded eruptions at Taal since
1572, it has been relatively quiet since 1977. |
