5 Jan 11 - State officials may never know for certain what killed an estimated 2 million fish in the Chesapeake Bay, says this article in the Baltimore Sun.

However, biologists with the Maryland Department of the Environment believe a rapid drop in temperature caused cold-water stress.

The bay's surface water temperature dropped to 32.9 degrees in late December, the coldest in 25 years, according to state records.

"Historical lows" (record lows, in other words) were reported at 13 locations on the bay.
