13 Jun 11 - A series of earthquakes shook the quake-weary New Zealand
city of Christchurch today, collapsing at least one building.
People fled buildings in panic when a 5.2-magnitude quake struck during
lunchtime. Just over an hour later, that quake was followed by a more
powerful magnitude 6.0 quake, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
At least 40 people were injured, Radio New Zealand reported, with at
least ten people taken to Christchurch Hospital.
Other residents from the devastated city cried in the streets and hugged
their children.
Power was cut to about 56,000 homes and business, and dust billowed from
the cordoned-off inner city devastated in February's major earthquake.
"We are being enveloped with dust. It is very, very scary," Christchurch
Mayor Bob Parker told New Zealand's National Radio.
Christchurch has been shaken by more than 7,000 so-called "aftershocks"
since a damaging magnitude 7.1 earthquake last September.
A 6.3-magnitude quake in Christchurch on February 22 of
this year killed 181 people and left 100,000 homes damaged - 10,000
beyond repair.
