5 Sep 10 - The Indonesian volcano that erupted last Sunday continues to shoot clouds of hot ash more than a mile into the air along with volcanic earthquakes. The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation recorded the volcano’s largest eruption on Friday morning, Sept. 3, that triggered over 52 quakes between Friday at midnight and 12 noon on Saturday. Now a week after the first eruption, thousands of refugees are still being warned of the danger of possible lava flows when rain falls on the mountain’s slopes. Sinabung last erupted in 1600, and officials acknowledged that they had not been monitoring the volcano because it had been dormant for so long. See also: |
