A total of 11 icebreakers, including the Taymyr-class Vaigach nuclear powered icebreaker, have been sent to help release the stranded ships. Only seven ships are currently sailing through the area, moving through ice channels hewed by the icebreakers. The rest have been unable to plow through the one-meter-thick ice floes. The Gulf of Finland has been iced over for more than a month. Some of these vessels are huge, looking to be more than 12 stories tall.
