Robert, 14 Mar 11 - You may have pointed this out already but it certainly does not appear to be a coincidence that we are seeing an increase in earthquakes and volcanic activity at the present time while a prolonged solar minimum has been occurring and may continue to occur for years to come. This may be related to changes in the magnetic field of the sun due to fewer sunspots and the sun’s magnetic field interacting with earth’s magnetic field. You certainly seem to have much more knowledge on this subject than I do. The Tambora eruption in 1815 occurred during the Dalton Minimum. Explosive eruptions of Mount Vesuvius began in 1631 during the long Maunder Minimum. Coincidence…maybe but I think not. Given the magnitude of the Japan quake I fear that a major volcanic eruption is likely sooner rather than later. I have been searching for information regarding this likely correlation but there appears to be very little published research on the topic. This is what NASA and NOAA scientists as well as University scientists should be researching instead of propagating the man-made global warming hoax. In regards to the latest climate and meteorological signals, the Pacific Decadal Oscillation has been in its cold phase since 2007 and likely will remain that way for the next 30 to 40 years. The Atlantic Multi-Decadal Oscillation has been its warm phase since 1995 but will likely revert back to its cold phase between 2015 and 2020. That has been responsible for the upswing in Atlantic Basin tropical cyclones since 1995 and not humans. Once we see the cold phase of the Atlantic Oscillation coupled with the cold phase of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation I would expect to see a significant increase in Arctic Sea Ice and also natural global cooling. I fear that increasing volcanic activity and volcanic ash in the atmosphere coupled with a cooler Pacific and soon to be cooler Atlantic may lead to another “Little Ice Age” or possibly a full blown Grand Ice Age. I hope I’m wrong! I’m not fear mongering. I just have serious and legitimate concerns. I would urge my fellow Americans to contact their members of Congress and urge them to push for increasing domestic oil and gas drilling as well as increasing coal mining. Taking corn and other grains out of the food supply and producing inefficient forms of ethanol will only make matters worse. If I’m right about significant global cooling soon to come, growing seasons will shorten and famines will develop. As you point out, we will then be fighting each other for limited food supplies.
