13 Jul 11 - With wilderness trails still covered with several feet of snow, park
officials announced that Montana's Going-to-the-Sun Road would be opened to the
public on July 13, the latest the road has ever opened due to weather.
Park officials have attributed the late opening to the high elevation snow that
continued into June, according to Missoulian.com. The heavy winter snowpack had
caused avalanches, adding to the job of removing snow from the mountain road.
Hikers are advised to use caution due to unseen holes and snow bridges that can
collapse. Highline Trail will remain closed and there is no projected opening
date at this time.
