. A fifth of the national workforce - 6.4 million - are estimated not to have turned up yesterday. London's buses were halted for the first time in living memory - they even continued to run during the Blitz - and the rail network ground to a halt. Airports were closed and Heathrow, the world's busiest terminal, closed both runways for several hours. More snow is expected overnight, and temperatures are forecast to plummet to -6C.
