According to the Icelandic Meteorological Office and Institute of Earth Sciences at the University of Iceland, the volcano has been somewhat more active during the past four days. It is estimated to be sending out between 11 and 22 tons of lava and ash per second, with no indication that the eruption is ending. So far it doesn't appear to be affecting nearby Katla volcano, as has happened during previous major Eyjafjallajökull eruptions. Scientists worry that Eyjafjallajökull could trigger an eruption at Katla. But I wonder if "trigger" is the proper word. Is it possible that, rather than being a trigger, Eyjafjallajökull is actually a precursor to a Katla eruption? That would certainly put a different slant on things.
