Icebreaker with 100 penguin-loving tourists stuck in Antarctic ice __________________
17 Nov 09 – A Russian icebreaker carrying more than 100 penguin-loving tourists, scientists and journalists on a cruise around Antarctica was struggling to free itself from sea ice, the tour operator said today. Although the vessel is about 5 miles (8 km) from clear water, an Argentine official says the ice will delay the ship’s return by only three to six days. Many of the passengers paid around $18,000.00 for the tour, billed as a chance to view emperor penguins on Snow Hill island. The Captain Khlebnikov icebreaker has been used as a cruise ship for several years and carries two helicopters.
