14 May 11 - Army engineers prepared
today to open the gates to an emergency spillway along the
still-rising Mississippi River.
Though this would divert floodwaters from Baton Rouge and New
Orleans, it could submerge about 3,000 square miles (7,770 sq km)
under as much as 25 feet (7.5 meters) of water - higher that the
roof tops! - in some areas, leaving about 25,000 people and 11,000
structures in harm's way.
Engineers fear that if they fail to take this action, a levee
failure could swamp New Orleans, Baton Rouge and many oil refineries
and chemical plants under as much as 20 feet (six meters) of water -
a disaster much worse than Hurricane Katrina.
.."Now's the time to evacuate," said Governor Jindal. "Now's the
time for our people to execute their plans. That water's coming."

Three thousand square miles! That's a third of
the size of the entire state of Vermont ... covered with water
higher than the roof tops. |
