Greenland much warmer in the past |

DNA extracted from ice cores in Greenland shows that armies of insects, moths and butterflies dwelt in lush forests of spruce and pine between 450,000 and 800,000 years ago, lush forests now buried beneath more than 2,000 meters (1¼ miles) of ice. “This part of the world was significantly warmer than most people thought,” said Professor Martin Sharp from the University of Alberta, Canada, a co-author of the paper. The ice cores also suggest that the ice sheet is more resistant to warming than previously thought, the scientists say.
