Eminent geophysicist says world on verge

of 'mini ice age'

Thinks it has already begun

1 June 11 - "An eminent Mexican geophysicist says that the world may be on the verge of an eighty-year cold period similar to the 'little ice age' experienced by Europe from 1300 to 1800 A.D.," says this article by Matthew Hoffman.

Sunspot activity since 1990

"Víctor Manuel Velasco, of the University of Mexico's Institute of Geophysics, says that recent winter conditions are similar to those of the 'little ice age', and in particular the 'Maunder Minimum,' a period during which sunspot activity dropped significantly," says Hoffman.

"The geophysicist believes that a "mini ice age" began in 2010 which will last between 60 and 80 years," according to a University of Mexico press release describing his views.

"We are talking about the period between 1645 and 1715, which is known as the Maunder Minimum, a period in which the sunspots practically disappeared from the surface of the sun, and in which our planet occupied a position similar to which it has today, with respect to the center of gravity of our [solar] system." Velasco said in an interview published by the university.

The fact that the Earth is in a similar position today in relation to the rest of the solar system as it was during the Maunder Minimum is significant for climate, says Velasco.

Velasco is one of many scientists who question the conclusions of the United Nation's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

"It will be nature that demonstrates which theory is the correct one," says Velasco. "However, the Earth is getting colder."

Last year, at the Fourth International Conference on Climate Change in Chicago, I had the good fortune to sit just 10 feet away from Dr. Velasco as he presented his views on the coming little ice age.

"Our preliminary studies of the last 2000 years show close connection between the variation of the global maxima and minima periods of secular solar activity and warming and mini ice age occurred during this period," said Dr. Velasco. "Global warming is associated to 'high' solar secular activity and global cooling is associated to 'low' solar activity."

"Such a modulation of the terrestrial temperature may bring unexpected results and consequences to the climatic change in the 21st century that may result in a mini-Ice Age caused by the decrease in solar activity that would begin in 2010 and last about 60 - 80 years," Velasco added.

I think Dr. Velasco is spot on.

Mountainous regions in the western United States are experiencing epic snowpacks right now. By "epic," I mean double, triple, sometimes even quadruple normal snowpacks. And many areas have endured the coldest April and May on record.

These record snowpacks and record low temperatures are not surprising when you consider that, according to NASA, the year 2009 marked the deepest solar minimum in nearly a century.

You can link to Dr. Velasco's PowerPoint presentation at the Chicago Climate Conference here:

Victor Manuel Velasco Herrera is a theoretical physicist and researcher at the Institute of Geophysics of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).

"The models and forecasts of the U.N. IPCC "are incorrect because they only are based on mathematical models and presented results at scenarios that do not include, for example, solar activity," says Velasco.
