was rattled by a 4.7-magnitude earthquake just before 3:00 a.m. this
morning. New Zealand's second largest city has endured 30 aftershocks in
the past 24 hours, sparking suggestions that residents will flee the
area.
"People are saying this is it
for me," says mayor Parker.
Yesterday's biggest tremor was
on par with the killer 6.3 magnitude quake that struck Christchurch in February.
It destroyed about 50 buildings and injured 46 people, two seriously.
All schools are closed today as muddy water
continues to bubble up through cracks in the streets.
