Drivers stranded by blizzards - thousands of commuters delayed by frozen railways

5 Mar 09 - Motorists were stranded and commuters faced rail disruption this morning after unexpected overnight storms dumped several inches of snow onto parts of England.

Drivers were caught out by blizzard-like conditions with some places seeing up to three inches of snowfall and temperatures as low as -2C.

Scotland and the north had been warned to prepare for another wintry blast, but forecasters had said England would escape the worst of the latest cold snap.

MeteoGroup forecaster Nikki Berry, said far more snow fell than was expected.
