16 Jan 09 - Sub-zero temperatures have swept across Canada and are now
spilling down into northern and northeastern parts of the United States.
In Winnipeg, temperatures on Tuesday night fell to -36C (-33F), while
temperatures in Regina, Saskatchewan, fell to -33C (-27F).
The current severe chill comes after one of the coldest Decembers in 26
years in Saskatchewan and the coldest in Manitoba in nearly ten years.
Quebec will likely see temperatures well below -20C (-4F) this weekend.
In the US Midwest, another winter storm left more than 20cm (8 inches)
of snow in parts of Indiana and Illinois, and is expected to dump up to
15 cm (6 inches) of snow on New York and Pennsylvania by Thursday night.
Arctic air will move south behind the storm, bringing the lowest
temperatures so far this winter across the northeastern United States by
Friday.
