Oil rationing considered |
|
|
As temperatures plummeted to -10c (14f), the Met office issued heavy snow warnings for another 10 inches of snow for northern Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and south-west England, more sub-zero temperatures, and no let-up in the bitterly cold weather for at least a month. As much as a foot of fresh snow is forecast for parts the South East and the Midlands. The Arctic conditions are set to last through the Christmas and beyond. ‘This December is almost certainly going to become the coldest since records began in 1910,’ said Met Office forecaster Barry Gromett. ‘It’s already a lot colder than the previous record which was set in 1981." With heating oil - used by around two million homes, schools and hospitals - nearing ‘crisis levels’, the Government is said to be considering rationing. All planes were grounded at London's Heathrow and Gatwick airports. Earlier thousands of passengers had found themselves trapped on-board their planes on the Tarmac as the airport ran out of parking spaces. One passenger said Heathrow's Terminal 5 was "absolute chaos".
